Out of my league. Like way out of my league. I can teach a Bible lesson. Or lead songs. Or game time—I can do game time. But organizing a 5 Day Bible Club in my own neighborhood was a little beyond the limits of my comfort zone. I didn’t even think there were kids in my neighborhood—let alone anyone who would come to a 5 Day Club.
But the big day came and the kids did too. Not many—just enough to make it feel like small group time at a Good News Club. Each day we talked about a different character quality. We had memory verse challenges, did Bible stories and skits, object lessons, and played games. The kids loved it. I did too.
Friday we talked about generosity. I told them the story of Elijah and the widow woman who gave him the last of her flour and oil, and how God multiplied what she gave away. We went over and over the Bible verse, “It is more blessed to give than to receive” (Acts 20:35). When it was all over, and time for the kids to go home, all I could think was, “What a great week.” It really was.
The best part of Bible Club, though, happened after the week was over—and it’s still happening. Kids come over all the time to play with my little brothers—and me. They tell me, “We want you to play with us—and do Bible Club.” I guess you could say, then, that we’ve been doing Bible Club ever since.
Just the other day, one little girl came to my door to see me. I had some friendship bracelets out that I’d made—all different colors and sizes. She was intrigued, so I told her she could pick one. She narrowed it down to her two favorites, and asked me which one I thought she should choose. “How about both?” I smiled.
“Really?” She was so happy. Just before she reached the door again to leave, she stopped. “I just remembered something,” she said. “It is more blessed to give than to receive.”
What an amazing mission field—right in my own backyard. No language school, no culture barriers, no raising support. Just kids. And a bunch of amazing opportunities to share the gospel. Share it every chance you get.
