How do you motivate a 5th grader to read their Bible? Candy! How do you get a 5th grader to understand and apply what they read? I have no idea.

For the past few weeks, I have been encouraging my 4th and 5th grade girls at Bible Club to read their Bibles. However, each week they would come back with excuses of why they weren’t able to do the assignment. This past week, I challenged them to read and think over what they were reading and then come back and let me know. Not only would they get some candy from the Bible Club bin, but I would also have a special prize for them.

Only one girl brought back what she had read off of the assigned reading. Not only was she excited to tell me what she had read, but she had also written out word-for-word each verse that was assigned. When the other girls saw her excitement in sharing what she had learned, they all unanimously agreed that they would read their bookmark assignments this next week! It was so encouraging to see them all excited to read their Bible. I can motivate them to read by giving candy, but only the Holy Spirit can give them a desire to apply what they’re reading to their own lives.
